"In the clump of banana trees where she hid with them, she blocked his mouth with one hand and with the other, held the breast in the baby's mouth. The small loincloth, which she always tied like all women on her kaba, was intended to be the only bulwark against the elephant mosquitoes that provoked him even in his ears, while biting his legs. He crushed them with rage and wondered to himself why they could not be a little understanding in view of the present situation."

This novel by André Lam is inspired by the reigns of two traditional chiefs during the tumultuous years of independence in Cameroon. Written in a dialogical narrative style where French and Mbo alternate without harming the coherence of the story, it highlights the rich heritage of this area.
